Film Festival Schedule

This year’s film festival might seem a little bit different than some from years past. There are no big name guest speakers, or famous directors introducing films.

The sixth annual Griffon International Film Festival begins April 19, and runs through April 23. Selected films from those submitted at withoutabox.com will be shown Monday through Friday each evening from 7pm to 9pm in Hearnes room 102.

These films were selected out of 88 entries and winners will be picked from each category. Information about the film festival is available online at http://www.missouriwestern.edu/GRIFF or call 816-271-5923. This is a free event so students and community members are invited to attend.

MWSU freshman Julie Velazquez is an English major who is excited to see what films are selected. “This festival gives students such as myself an opportunity to see films that we might not have had the chance to see elsewhere,” said. Velazquez. “Who knows we may see a first film of some future Hollywood director.”

Community member Brian Cusack is a retired Vietnam vet who has 25 years in the US Army. “I just moved into the area, I don’t know much about the festival,” said Cusack. “But I do love films and since it’s free you can bet I will attend.”

The festival also offers viewers the chance to see student presentations on famous directors and to watch one of their earlier films. These presentations are occurring April 19 through April 23 from 2pm to 5pm in the black box theater in Potter room 106.

“I am really excited about seeing the presentation on Kathryn Bigelow,” said Velazquez. “She is an inspiration for female directors and I am so happy she won picture of the year.”
